Ringway answers the call for blood!

With concerns that blood stocks could drop due to swine flu, the need for blood donors never stops. Keeping this in mind, Ringway operations manager, Barrie Lee organised that the National Blood Service mobile unit visit the Kent Highways Services (KHS) Ashford depot for the fourth time over two day period on 24 and 25 August.

With Barrie’s encouragement colleagues have successful donated 65 units of blood over the two days. Ringway employees along with volunteers from Kent County Council, Kent Highway Services and Jacobs had previously donated over 179 units of blood to help local people at the depot.

Barrie Lee said: “It’s amazing what the promise of a free cup of tea and some biscuits will do...  We hope to encourage more new donors and will continue to invite The National Blood Service team back to our Ashford depot.”

Ringway Divisional Manager (Kent), John Martin commented: “As a local employer, Ringway encourages its staff to support the local community in which we operate. Barrie’s commitment is remarkable and a great example to others.”

According to the National Blood Service, there are 1.4m registered blood donors in England and North Wales but around 200,000 give up every year for various reasons including medical conditions or pregnancy, so there is a continuous need to attract new donors.

The service also provides specialist medical advice and clinical support to hospitals, as well as educating and training transfusion medicine specialists.
