Former pupil returns to help old school in Crawley

On 21 September, former Seymour primary school pupil, Shahzad Hussain led a group of volunteers from Ringway to help transform a derelict space of ground to enhance the learning experience for pupils at his old school as part of the Business in the Community’s employee volunteering scheme.

Seymour C of E primary school, located in Broadfield one of the largest neighbourhoods in Crawley will now benefit from the development of a new space that is safe, usable and hopefully inspirational after a dedicated team of Ringway staff gave their support and time.

Volunteer team leader and Ringway Estimator Shahzad Hussain said: “As a former pupil, it’s wonderful to be able to return to my old school with my colleagues and help improve the learning facilities for pupils. As a local company Ringway is keen to support the local community in which its employees live and work.”

Ringway Infrastructure Services Managing Director Patrick Sulliot, who also took part, commented: “Working at Seymour Primary School has provided a great opportunity for our head office team in Horsham to support a worthwhile cause and builds on previous similar work undertaken in West Sussex. Ringway is committed to helping community schemes as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility approach and this scheme demonstrates how such projects benefit not only our local stakeholders, but also our employees and business and why we find them a valuable experience. “

Seymour C of E primary school head teacher, Sarah Park said: "Thanks to the energy and efforts of volunteers from Ringway we have now moved much closer to our goal which is to establish an outdoor Discovery Area consisting of a small copse and a sensory garden. The Discovery Area will provide a safe space where our younger children can develop their experience and understanding of the natural environment. Having opportunities to learn outdoors will help to stimulate the children’s curiosity and expand their imaginations.

I am really grateful to Ringway for their involvement in making this project a reality and also to Lesley Edrich, from Seymour School who has worked with the children to design the space and has coordinated the work with support from the Business in the Community.

Marina Pevzner Hennessy, BITC South East Area Manager said: “Employee volunteering is one of the most important and effective ways that companies can increase their positive impact in the community and leverage a key resource beyond cash. We are delighted to work with Seymour Primary School and to match them with support from our member businesses.
