Constructing a future

When students are thinking about their future careers, the construction industry isn’t always an obvious choice. That’s because it generally has a low profile within schools and colleges, so many young people are unaware of the opportunities that the industry is able to provide.

To try and tackle this issue, Ringway, one of the Kent Highway Services Alliance partners, has set up a team to raise the profile of the construction industry within schools and colleges.

The Ringway Schools Partnership works directly with schools which are local to its depots and holds educational fun days to introduce young people to the industry. The ultimate aim is to highlight the importance of construction and to increase the number of people choosing a career in this industry.

The fun days include a block paving exercise and a surveying and setting out exercise. These specific activities have been chosen because they give the students a chance to learn through hands on experience.

It’s not just the students who are learning either – the staff taking part have also been able to benefit from hearing fresh opinions about the construction industry that will help us to improve the way we work with communities.
