A Winter's tale

Each year from October to April, the Highways Agency, local authorities, Met Office, Police and a huge number of contractors are all on full winter alert; with fleets of salt spreaders, snowploughs and snowblowers on stand-by to keep the UK's motorways and council road networks clear of ice and snow. The teams have to be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and be prepared to go into action every time freezing temperatures are forecast: working together to keep roads open when bad weather strikes and to help keep the network safe and open for road users.

This is an enormous task, and as the early months of 2010 demonstrated, Mother Nature has the ability to surprise and, without careful planning and a robust winter maintenance strategy in place, she could bring the country to a standstill.
