Three generations of the same family have been working for Ringway on the term services contract for North Yorkshire County Council, for collectively, 78 years. The Boreham family of Starbeck continues to value the security that working for the national company based in Ripley near Harrogate provides.
Grandfather Fred (66), son Paul (47) and grandson Joe (23) work daily for Ringway on the roads in and around the borough, on new and refurbishment projects. These include the general maintenance of the carriageway and footways, drainage improvements and larger schemes the area has seen this summer such as the resurfacing of Leeds and Otley road.
Even after five years of working in Harrogate himself, Richard Whitaker the local Contracts Manager for Ringway is constantly reminded of the value of local knowledge. “The experience that Fred and the other older members of the team bring to the organisation is immense. The guys know what is under the ground before we start to dig it up and on many occasions we‘ve changed our method of work to account for pipe cables, even concrete that have been encountered on previous jobs on the same street. This information is being passed on to the other members of the team and saves wasted work reducing the length of disruption to the public.”
With many years experience working on the borough’s highways, the Boreham relatives highlight the benefits of being a part of the Ringway family. For son Paul, the security that comes with working for a successful company with long-term contracts is important. The Borehams also value Ringway’s developed training scheme which is offered to all members of staff. Fred notes how their employment at Ringway has been a benefit: “We have worked together for a long time and we each have our specific jobs. We’re a well drilled team!”
To some of us, working with close family members may seem like a daunting thought, however for the Boreham’s they take full advantage of this in-built support system, “We rely on each other, especially when we are called out in the night and need extra help” says Paul. “I know they are only a phone call away and they will come out for me every time.”
Extending to the third generation, grandson Joe reveals why he initially chose to apply for a career with the company: “The long-term career prospects that Ringway could offer for a lad of my age was really attractive and, of course, being able to work with other members of my family was a real bonus too.”
Kristine Pollock, Group HR Director for Ringway adds: “We are delighted that the Boreham family are still with us after all these years. We have developed a comprehensive employee package that delivers real benefits to our employees, for all stages of their career with us. And with the constant developments in working practices and legislation, we make sure our teams are fully up to speed with all the latest news by providing appropriate training programmes. We also value the expertise and knowledge that comes with hands-on experience, and at the end of the day, it’s nice to keep it in the family!”
