Last week the Government formally announced a funding boost of over £8bn for the maintenance of roads across the UK. Greater investment for repairs of potholes and other defects will allow our teams to continue improving the road network and benefitting local communities.

To help promote the Government's increase in road funding last week, Ringway hosted two media events on behalf of its clients Surrey Highways and Hertfordshire County Council.

The Department for Transport (DfT) liaised with Surrey Highways and Ringway to set up a media opportunity on Monday, 13 November. The Secretary of State for Transport, Rt Hon Mark Harper MP, visited the Merrow Lane Depot, Guildford, where he was shown the new fleet of 38 gritters, including a new electric gritter, and met some employees before going to watch a pothole be repaired by a Ringway gang on Epsom Road.

Matt Furniss, Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Economic Growth at Surrey County Council said: "We welcome this funding to help repair and improve Surrey's roads following an unprecedented increase in the number of potholes last winter.

"We have some of the country's busiest roads here in Surrey, which naturally takes its toll, but we continue to invest over £200 million in maintaining our roads and pavements. This additional funding will allow us to prioritise areas in most need of repair and deliver further improvements to our highways network for everyone who travels through our county."

On Thursday, with the time of Mark Harper's funding announcement confirmed, Hertfordshire CC were in talks with Ringway and JCB about setting up a photocall to respond to the news of the funding boost. The set up was similar – a crew would be filmed repairing a patch of highway, using the JCB Pothole Pro, whilst spokespeople for Herts CC were interviewed.

Transport Secretary Mark Harper said: "Most people travel by road and potholes can cause misery for motorists, from expensive vehicle repairs to bumpy, slow, and dangerous journeys. Our £8.4 billion boost to repair roads shows that we're on the side of drivers.

"Today's biggest ever funding uplift for local road improvements is a victory for all road users, who will enjoy smoother, faster and safer trips - as we use redirected HS2 funding to make the right long-term decisions for a brighter future."

This time around BBC News, Channel 5, local radio and print media attended, and again, both Ringway and our client team featured on the news.
